Acrylic paint, MDF board, wooden dowels

2023

For this piece, I wanted to try explore the use of wood materials and go outside of my comfort zone. Where my usual concentration relies on portraiture and facial features, this piece sought to explore more organic forms and create a new composition. The random shapes/forms and varying colors give the piece a sense of dynamism and movement, drawing the viewer's attention to the interplay between positive and negative space.

The use of MDF board as a material adds a level of texture and depth to the piece, as well as a certain rigidity that contrasts with the organic shapes. Originally, I struggled to make the piece stand up, but I was able to deconstruct and re-glue, drying it in a brace, that allowed it to stand on its own.

By exploring the material and form in this way, I created a unique piece that invites the viewer to examine and contemplate the relationship between the shapes, colors, and space. Additionally, I reexamined what would typically be consumed as "flat" shapes, within a 3D structure.
