Monoprints
My monotypes feature a moth motif, which is symbolic of change and transformation. I choose this imagery because of the combination of its bold lines and precise detailing. I wanted an image that provided layering and could vary in composition. As a novice to printmaking, my main goal was to utilize an image that could be replicated easily but also provided a challenge in its stratification. I was most surprised by the challenge of first trace monotyping—I had to get comfortable with not being in control of the process. As a painter, I’m used to being able to conduct the movement of the paint. In printmaking, I had to surrender to the process completely and embrace the outcomes. In doing this, I found that I was able to enjoy the creative process more thoroughly. I think a strength in my work is the variety in color and stencil positioning. Each print is unique, despite utilizing the same imagery. I would like to improve upon my blocking technique and explore the printing press more.
